HOW TO SELECT A SNOW CONTRACTOR

HELP!

There are so many contractors! Some of them are hard to Reach and others won't leave me alone. What do I do?

When you are trying to find the right snow removal company, what is the best way to do this?

First off, you should be able to contact them whether it be by phone, text, or email. Usually, the reason for constant communication in the middle of a contract is because proper expectations were not initially set or the contractor is not following through on their promises, whether it be in the initial contact stage, or the service stage,

One thing you, as the client, can do to assist in this, is to be clear about your needs and your concerns. Do not be afraid of being ‘needy’.  A contractor that wants to give you great service is eager to know these things.

The contractor should inform you that the thicker the snow is, the more time it takes to remove and it is much harder on your property and their equipment and there is a cost fluctuation to reflect that. It is always a good idea to clear at a lower accumulation. This does mean the frequency of service will be more, but it drastically prevents the risk of a hard packed base layer, excessive ice build up, and less time for the service to take place. If there is ice or a hard layer of any sort, the time to properly service a driveway can increase dramatically.

Do The Snow Removal Contractors Know What They Are Doing?

Make sure that your contractor is including a cost to service all types of circumstances. These are situations like low and high accumulation, potential for snow storage removal, an option for salting, or even any irregular services such as there is a special event going on that your property needs special attention for.

The worst situation to be in is when the words “I don't do that” or “that wasn't in the contract” come up. These things should be sorted out in the bidding process.

The right contractor may not always be the cheapest. Ask yourself, is this cost going to give me the value I want? Or is this not enough to do the right job.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?

INSURANCE:  This is very important and often overlooked. Snow removal by nature is high risk. The contractor is working in adverse conditions to make them safe again. Accidents are a possibility. Make sure your contractor is trusted and has the right coverage to protect both you as the customer and them so they can continue to service you.

New contractors can sometimes be unreliable because they do not have time invested to “figure it out”. Lots of new businesses often close down in the early stages because business ownership is a task in itself and can be challenging if not prepared for properly. Choosing a company that has a solid reputation, experience, is fully licensed, insured, and offers exceptional services and tremendous value.

Last but not least,
you should feel feel comfortable with who you are choosing. Does their company character give you reassurance that they have your best interest in mind? It is important to like who they are as a company so getting along is something that is often overlooked, but very important.
